External Anatomy

Earthworms are segmented animals in the phylum Annelida or Annelids. Annelida, a Latin term, translates to "little rings". The body of the earthworm is segmented into roughly 100-150 fused rings or segments.

Clitellum
  • distinct swelling called about one-third of the way down the earthworm.
  • often white or orange in colour
  • produces most of the material secreted to form earthworm cocoons
  • only found on adult worms
Tubercula Pubertatis (TP)
  • glandular swellings located on both sides of the clitellum
  • only found on adult worms

Genital Tumescences (GT)
  • areas of modified epidermis (skin) that do not have distinct boundaries
  • openings through which follicles of genital setae open
  • pattern and location of the GT are important clues to identifying different species of earthworms

Epidermis
  • outter layer (skin)
  • secretes a mucous
