Skeletal System

Earthworms do not have a skeletal system.

Two sets of muscles are used for locomotion - one set elongates the worm, the other set shortens the worm.  Go here for more information about locomotion.

Setae
  • tiny bristle-like structures on each segment of the earthworm, except the first and last
  • help the earthworm to move and sense the environment
  • number and arrangement of setae help identify each species of earthworms
