Digestive System

Earthworms consume decomposing plant and animal matter.

The major organs of the digestive system include:
  • mouth - surrounded by strong lips used to grasp and ingest food particles
  • pharynx - food is lubricated by mucus secretions
  • esophagus - calcium carbonate is added to the food and mucus secretions to neutralize acids
  • crop - temporary storage location
  • gizzard - digestive process begins as glands excrete enzymes, breaking down the organic material
  • intestine - bacteria complete the digestion of organic material
  • anus - undigested organic matter leaves the worm
